5 Ways to eat healthily when travelling abroad

Going away is an exciting time and for most people, it’s a time to treat yourself and indulge in a range of food and drink. But what if you are going away for longer than your standard week? Or you have been working hard to improve your diet and don’t want to completely throw it away? While treating yourself is an important part of your holiday, you don’t have to stop it altogether. Instead, you can find a happy medium so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Below we have put together five tips to help you eat healthily when travelling abroad.

Bring healthy snacks with you

Often when you get hungry, the first thing you will do is look for the nearest food source that you can consume quickly. In most cases, this could be a bag of crisps, a chocolate bar, or some ice cream from the gelato shop nearby. By packing some healthy snacks, you can curb your hunger as soon as you start to feel it. Healthy snacks that are easy to bring with you can include fruit, nuts, roasted chickpeas, protein bars or jerky.

Look at the meal choices in advance

Part of being away is trying all the different restaurants and bars in the area you’re visiting. Instead of restricting how many times you eat out, instead browse the menu in advance to make sure they have some healthy options. Some restaurants will give you nutritional information about the meals they are preparing as well as having a dedicated healthy section. If you are unsure of where to eat, you could use the restaurant’s section of Tripadvisor and filter your options down by healthy dishes. All the restaurants that are considered to be “healthy” in your search parameter will show up.

Stay hydrated

Carrying a bottle of water when travelling is very useful, not only for keeping you hydrated in the hot weather and keeping your energy levels up, but to also stop you from snacking. When you’re thirsty, often your body will mistake this for hunger, which results in you eating to stop the feeling. By having a drink you can quell this feeling and won’t feel the need to snack unnecessarily.

Cook for yourself instead of eating out

Enjoying eating out is a big part of travelling and being away from home, so by all means don’t restrict this. However, if you are staying in accommodation that includes cooking facilities and you enjoy cooking, then this can be a great way to eat healthily when travelling. By cooking your own meals, you can control the ingredients that you put in the food and know exactly what you are eating. Plus, making your own meals is often cheaper than eating out, saving you money along the way.

Stay mindful throughout your trip away

It’s easy to be led astray from your healthy diet when travelling, thanks to the many food and drink choices readily available. Eating unhealthy can make you feel lethargic and unable to enjoy your trip as you should. Try to stay mindful of your diet throughout and exert your willpower when exploring and seeing the options in front of you.

The Summary

Trying to eat healthily when travelling is not as hard as you may initially have thought. By planning in advance you can do your research on the restaurants in the area and prepare snacks to bring with you.
